Accountability and transparency legislation signed into law
August 12, 2009

Springfield, Ill. – Comprehensive legislation intended to increase transparency and promote accountability in state government was signed into law on August 12, said Senator Dan Cronin.

“I’d sponsored similar legislation in the past, but this year I think lawmakers made a concerted effort to show the people of Illinois that there is a willingness to open the process up to scrutiny,” said Cronin. “Many citizens contacted me in support of this Web site, so I’m pleased to see that it was finally signed into law. I believe this will be a useful tool in returning accountability to state government.”

Cronin explained that he sponsored House Bill 35, which requires the Department of Central Management Services to create a public Web site known as the “Illinois Transparency and Accountability Portal.”

The Web site would allow Illinois residents to access a variety of information including state expenditures, tax credits, state employee salaries and state contracts.

Cronin said that the measure is similar to legislation that was introduced at the federal level, which created a similar federal spending Web site. At the state level Missouri has a similar Web site, which has received widespread support from grassroots organizations, trade associations, press associations and taxpayer protection groups.

The new law will take effect on January 1, 2010.
